32nd Annual Night Time Charity Walk

Teams of 4 take a 10 mile sponsored walk through the Chiltern Hills, answering a fiendish set of questions to find your route, to raise money for Alexander Devine Childrens Hospice, and other Rotary charities & charities of your choice.

Moonraker is an orienteering exercise held at different venues in the Chiltern Hills overnight on a Saturday/Sunday in March every year. It follows woodland paths, bridle paths, paths across fields, tarmac surface of private and public roads. The paths surfaces may be hard and crisp if frosty or soft, squidgy and wet if its rained or dry and friable or all of those and some. The event route consists of two different five mile loops, forming a very crude figure of eight with a number of checkpoints along the way and our Central control located at the at the junction of the two loops i.e. at the start and finish point for both loops.

The first two teams start at approx. 19.00 and go off on either the blue or red loop. Two teams then leave every five minutes after until all have gone. The teams follow a set of instructions that gives you compass bearings and directions on how to get to the next checkpoint. You are required to use an orienteering compass and have a basic understanding of a ordnance survey map 1:25000 scale.

Participants are given a section of map that the route will cover, but not the actual route and a set of instructions to allow navigation to the next checkpoint. The map helps participants to plot where they have been and possibly to answer questions along the route, as they may be based on features on the map. Obviously, you have to know where you are to find some of the answers!

If you wish to enter you could buy an OS Explorer Map 181 to study and practice with. You can also get some advice on how to read a map from Simon King. Remember, it should still be dark by the time you finish. LED type Head and hand torches are better than bulb type torches and the batteries, if new, last forever.

Clothing for the night is very dependent on the weather and the Chilterns can be completely different to where you may live, so attention to the local area forecast is important prior to the night. Waterproof walking boots are important along with windproof / waterproof / warm clothing. Trainers, other sports shoes and high heels are not appropriate and can be sucked off your feet if the mud gets interesting!

The event is not a race and we try to discourage running or jogging because of the varying conditions. Also remember, if you go up, you go down and if you go down you go up. Seems a bit silly, but the Chilterns are not known for their flat open plains!

Hot food and drinks are included and are available at the half way point. Checkpoints along the route will have water only.

Teams may consist of more than four (5 or 6 max) but each extra person over the four is an additional £10.00. The fee covers the cost of administration of the event – e.g. tent hire, food, fees etc.

All money raised as sponsorship by the teams is donated to charity. All money collected by a team is sent to Langley and Iver Rotary and 50% of what is raised by the team may then be donated to your teams chosen charity, the remainder goes to the Rotary Club of Langley and Iver’s chosen charities.

The President may nominate a charity to benefit most from Moonraker and this year Alexander Devine Childrens Hospice, ALEXD, is the charity that will receive the majority share of money raised this year.

Past event – Bath Half Marathon


The Bath Half Marathon – or the ‘Bath Half’ as it is affectionately known, is one of the longest established and most popular city centre road events in the UK. It is also the largest charity fundraising event in the South West region, raising over £1.5 million for charity last year alone. The course itself is fast and flat making it suitable for all abilities – for beginners whose key objective is to complete the course, to more regular long-distance event runners, looking to beat their personal best time. It covers a two lap 13.1 mile (21.1km) traffic-free course straddling both sides of the River Avon. The race starts and finishes in Great Pulteney Street, in the heart of the World Heritage City of Bath

You don’t have to raise money for charity, but we’re delighted that most of you chose to do so. If you have not already chosen a charity, why not run for our Lead Charity Coppafeel, or one of our other official race charities ?

We are very proud of the event’s reputation for its wonderful atmosphere, fast flat course and of course fantastic location.
